I want to be a saint,
A saint of generosity.
It's all about knowing how to give,
To give freely of yourself, offer comfort until it hurts,
And never ask for returns.
I want to be a saint,
A saint of melancholy.
It's all about knowing how to hurt,
To help people cry when they need to
And give them the peace of a tear well shed.
I want to be a saint,
A saint in absentia
It's all about knowing how to retreat,
To retreat with dignity at the end of an evening
And put myself back in my box until I'm needed again.
I watch you with her,
I see you smile,
And know my work is done:
I am a saint of the impossible.
